Have I raved about Candy Claws to you yet? They're these super great people from Ft. Collins Colorado. Underwater music. I remember this one time my friend Mason stole a big industrial tank of Nitrous Oxide. Candy Claws kind of remind me of that. They are by far my favorite band in Colorado. What else is new....? Working on a bunch of new songs for you all. Then recording. Then album... you know the drill.

Oh! and... Steve at states rights asked me to get him raw tracks from 'young punks' (guitars, bass, drums, vocals etc all separately and alone) for a ROCKBAND version of the album that you can play at home, so I've been digging into the old pro-tools sessions to get that ready. Hope this project comes together! More on that soon.

YOUNG PUNKS!!!

People from the 'indie' world have been asking me, "Why did you name the album 'young punks' if you aren't a punk band?" I dug this video up to help articulate my answer.

I named the album 'YOUNG PUNKS' because I can relate to this more than I can to the over thought, art-school-driven, 'indie-style' music of today.

I knew something had to change in my world when we found ourselves sharing stages with groups that reminded me more the Johnas Brothers than of the original reason I got into playing music. (see above.)

We try to bring this influence to every show we play. Come. Get in. Get young. Get punk.

HEALING

So yeah, tour was rad. Thanks to everyone. White fang, maximum. Donovan and the Reno Gang, maximum. Dave Dondaro, maximum. Adam and Crepe Place, maximum. Joseph, Arvel and Aron, maximum.

Adam's foot is healing and he's actually putting weight on it now. Thank you to everyone who gave us pain pills and crutches and bandages. It turns out he broke his pointer toe. Tough-ey played pedal steel for you every night on a broken foot. Beat that black flag! Lesson learned... Stay away from the sketchy skate park in Anacortes.

However... DO go rip the Santa Cruz skate park with those maximum Santa Cruz rippers!

Oh and Andrew Watson made this shirt and patch design for us. Let me know if you want one.

WE DID IT!

Last night we stayed up late and finally finished the new record ‘young punks’ officially due out in April 09 on States Rights Records. I gotta say, it feels good man! A bunch of slackers actually finished something. We will be hitting the west coast and the northwest in March so we can share the fruits of our labor with you. So get ready for that western friends! Just have to wait this winter out. I hope gas prices stay low.

We have some Colorado shows coming up. Check the calendar. If anyone knows how to play the Colorado mountain towns let me know.

Oh and ....WE FUCKING WON! BARACK OBAMA !!! I told you that these dark clouds would part! I feel lucky to be alive in this exciting day and age. Let’s do 2009 HARD!

NEW DRUMMER

So much... So much....
We got a new drummer! We are proud to welcome Logan to BWC. I remember a few years ago watching Boulder’s teamAWESOME! play with my jaw on the ground as this dude ripped. When Team awesome announced that they were playing their last show we pounced.

What else is new....? Oh yeah....! We got this fancy booking agency. Don’t worry. We have not gone all ‘industry’ or anything like that. The good folks at INVISIBLE CITY BOOKING are from the same street that we are so you know they know how you and I do. If Jeremy at invisible city contacts you don’t worry. He’s good people. You and I can still talk as much as ever. It’s actually better this way. We can talk about life and things besides booking shows! Look for us on the west coast this spring.

The new record is almost done! (Due out Early Spring.) We’ve been getting it! I mean really gettin’ it! There is going to even be a littles paia song and a Joe Sampson song on it. Speaking of Adam and Joe... They also have some new recordings out soon. Joe is releasing part of his vast catalog in the irish label Yer Bird Records. He’s also been working with Jeff on their new Wentworth Kersey album. Adam has also been working on his new littles paia jam due out along with the new BWC record. (TWO RECORDS!) We’ve been setting up the microphones, learning Adam’s songs and puttin’ it on tape. All live. All Littles.

So I guess the other new thing in BWC world is this new website. Nothing against Chris Mac and the good folks at indiepages.com who hosted and maintained the old love letter band site for years, it’s just that I wanted to try to do this by myself to see if I could do it. You know? In my simple mind the internet is magic. I have absolutely no idea how this stuff works so... have patience with me. I prefer to spend my time making music or watching Curb Your Enthusiasm and Arrested Development DVDs or just going out and hanging with my dog. This is our public place to give anyone who might care to know information about this music that we make.

Why SECULAR music?

It would seem like a no brainer to categorize a group like BWC that mostly plays in the style of American 'rock' and 'pop' music as secular; like it would just go without saying. But in the last 5 or so years we have noticed something very troubling. It's nation wide but has a stronghold in our home state of Colorado. Specifically the front range and Colorado Springs.

It seems that recently, christian music, in an attempt to appear more 'hip' and 'fun', or to appear that there isn't actually a theological agenda behind what they are doing, has adopted the style of modern, 'hip' secular music. Like a trojan horse, they are sneaking their theological agenda to the kids in the disguise of secular music.

Now, we understand and accept that 'christian rock' music has existed for a long long time. This does not bother us. In fact, BWC is very influenced by some forms of gospel music. Traditionally gospel and christian rock music has been quite open about their theological views. They wear it on their sleeves quite heavily, with lyrics like, "God is a mighty god... Jesus I love you..." etc... This is fine with us. This form of christian music has been honest about their message and has always been clear about where they stand.

But with this new brand of what I like to call, 'secretly christian' music there is something dangerous and very misleading going on. These new christian bands do not have lyrics about god or jesus or anything like that. At first glance they would appear to be very secular in nature. They come in the form of hardcore, punk, metal, electronica, indie, emo, screamo (insert trendy youth friendly genre name)... Secular music no? But upon further examination of these groups we discover a very deep connection to the christian mega-churches. These bands are often funded by religious organizations. They play in venues that may appear secular but are also funded by the mega-churches. These venues often try to appear to be DIY in nature, a 'positive all ages drug and alcohol free, violence free, non profit punk venue for youth'. Kind of that hardcore punk, 'food not bombs' type of vibe. All of these things are fine and positive. As with the christian religion, we agree with many of the positive aspects. BWC have played in and support many all ages, positive youth type places. But the difference is that the places we play are not secretly affiliated with any mega-church.

*side note: In America all churches are considered non-profit though some mega churches bring in millions of revenue dollars. It's easy for these venues to claim non-profit when they are funded by a mega-church.

Traditionally the christian church has tried to keep it's youth away from the evils of things like, rock and roll and subcultures. It seems like they have found a new attack though. It's like if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. The megga-churches have now created their own version of a rock and roll subculture that their kids can safely take part in with out the dangers of things like the independent and critical thought and rebellion associated with the real secular musical subculture.

Let me be clear. We have absolutely NOTHING against the christian religion or any religion but we feel strongly that any theological message or agenda that you have should be presented honestly and not disguised in the form of 'hip' secular music that is 'for the kids'. This is the difference between honest religious expression and propaganda. If you are christian call yourself christian, sing about what you believe in. If other people believe in what you believe in they will choose to listen to you. But please be honest about where you stand. The kids that like to dance at your concerts and buy your records deserve the freedom to choose what kind of theological messages that they are exposed to. If you are not open about your ties to the megga-churches than you are robbing people of that choice. To try to sneak it in via secular pop culture forms is misleading and borderline brainwashing.

This is why Bad Weather California purposefully classifies it's self as a 'Secular Musical Group'. We are not anti christian. We are pro-honesty.
